Choir

The Houston Christian High School Concert Choir is one of the premier choirs in Texas. For the past twenty consecutive years, this choir received the honor of being a Texas Association of Private and Parochial School's Vocal Music State Champion. The Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Private School Music Educators Association have given many students in the choir first place awards. The Houston Christian High School Concert Choir performs throughout Texas and in the spring of 2007 performed in Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The choir has performed internationally in concert tours throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. The Houston Christian Concert Choir carries a standards of excellence for Christian young people interested in developing their gifts in performing arts.

The Houston Christian High School Concert Choir is the current Overall State Vocal Champion for TAPPS 5A schools in Texas.

Show Choir

Show Choir is an auditioned ensemble of 20 or less singers who perform various styles of music including Broadway, Show Tunes, and Pop with choreography. Show Choir is extra curricular and rehearses after school one day a week. Their performances include the Choir Fall Concert, Christmas Program, Spring Concert, and Spring Trip as well as churches, civic organizations and specialty functions. The singers experience a yearly fall trip to New York City where they have opportunity to enjoy Broadway Musicals. They compete in the TAPPS 5A District and State Competition and consistently receive superior ratings for their performance.

TMEA

Texas Music Educators Association is an organization to encourage and support music education in the schools. Houston Christian High School choir students may audition for District, Region, and All-State Choir. The audition preparation and process is designed for the advanced student. TMEA includes students in private and public schools. Most universities provide a summer All-State Choir Camp to prepare the student for the competition.

Honor Choir

Honor Choir is a select group of 9th and 10th grade students who have been chosen by their Choral Director to sing in the Region Honor Choir. The director may select up to 8 advanced singers to participate. The students attend the TMEA Region Choir Weekend in November and perform with the other Honor Choir students from all schools in the Region. The choir performs on the Region Choir Concert.

TPSMEA

The purpose of the Texas Private School Music Educators Association is to provide a state-wide organization specifically focused on the needs of the private and parochial school music educators and students. The activities and/or the organizations of TPSMEA are designed to enhance and promote the teaching of music by providing appropriate opportunities for enrichment and achievement.

TPSMEA All-State Choir

The advanced voice students may audition for a place in the 2005-2006 TPSMEA All-State Choir. Following the audition process, the auditions are judged and the top singers throughout the state are selected to the All-State Choir. The All-State Choir, Band, and Orchestra perform in concert in January. Being selected and performing as a member of the All-State Choir is an outstanding musical experience and a very prestigious honor.

The students prepare the audition selections and record in the presence of the director. Please see the Choir Calendar for recording date. Music and entry fees are provided by HCHS.

Vocal Ensembles

Choir students are given opportunity to participate in ensembles and compete in the TAPPS 5A Vocal Music Ensemble Competition for District and State. Ensembles include Mixed Sacred, Girls Sacred, Boys Sacred, Girls Madrigal, Mixed Madrigal, Girls Small Ensemble, Mixed Small Ensemble, Show Choir, Girls Pop I, Girls Pop II, and Boys Pop. The HCHS Ensembles have consistently received Superior Ratings at competition.

Vocal Solo Competition

Choir students are given opportunity to compete in the TAPPS 5A District and State Vocal Solo Competition. Students prepare and perform one solo by memory selected from the PML (Prescribed Music List) according to the TAPPS Rules.

Piano Solo Competition

Choir students are given opportunity to compete in the TAPPS District and State Piano Solo Competition. Students prepare and perform one solo by memory selected from the PML (Prescribed Music List) according to the TAPPS Rules.
