"Studies in Leadership"

Studies in Leadership is an elective leadership course for sophomores, juniors and seniors. The course is taught by the Leadership Program Director. Throughout the course, students will study four main areas:

  • Study of famous leaders.
  • Guest speakers from around the country w/question and answer time
  • An academic study of leadership from the recognized experts in leadership studies (Maxwell, Posner, Kouzes, Zenger, Folkman, Covey, etc.)…
  • Team and individual studies and reports to the class.
  • Miscellaneous leadership topics such as time management, meeting agendas and Robert's Rules of Order, trust, communication, counseling, discipline, etc.
  • A study of various organizations for vision, culture, strategy, change, and organizational leadership.
  • Managing people.
  • Time, information and resource management.
  • Problem solving strategies.
  • Film to illustrate the leadership topic.
  • Technical and analytical skills required from managers and when.
  • DISC, Myers-Briggs, Blake-Mouton, and the Leadership Practices Inventory focusing on the students' leadership and personality styles.
  • A culture case study of the U.S. Marines which illustrates several excellent leadership practices.
  • Off site trip to the Bush Library.
  • Group activities and problem solving which illustrate excellent leadership practices.
  • Reading the book The Leadership Moment by Michael Useem with nine stories of leadership achievements and disasters.
  • Close order drill
  • Many class leadership activities
