Mathematics

The Houston Christian High School Mathematics Department encourages each student’s active participation in his or her academic education and fosters a classroom environment that demands student interaction and leadership, resulting in higher critical thinking skills. We endeavor to provide instruction emphasizing a multi-representational approach to each course, with concepts, results and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally. The focus of each course is not the memorization of techniques or problem types, but the emphasis of broad concepts, unifying themes and widely applicable methods of problem-solving. While manipulation and computational competence are important outcomes, they are not the core of our courses. The concept approach allows students to more fully investigate and connect mathematical ideas as he or she encounters progressively complicated topics in the curriculum of successive courses. Technology is used by faculty and students to reinforce relationships among the multiple representations of functions, to confirm written work, to implement experimentation and to assist in interpreting results. Students are expected to form and participate in student-led study groups for reinforcement and mastery of course curriculum. Leadership lessons are integrated into the curriculum throughout the year.
